Cruising is one of the most accessible ways to travel: you unpack once, the dining room and theater are an elevator ride away, and the ship brings the destinations to you. It works best with the right ship, the right cabin and the right ports.
- Newer, larger ships usually have more accessible cabins, wider corridors and more elevators.
- Docked ports beat tender ports. Check how you will get ashore at each stop.
- Accessible shore excursions are offered at many ports; ask for vehicle lifts or low-floor coaches.
- River cruises vary widely: some ships have elevators, many European docks have ramps, and ships sometimes moor side by side, which means walking through other ships.
- Tell the cruise line about medical equipment, oxygen, dialysis or service animals well in advance.
Frequently Asked Questions
How do I book an accessible cabin?
Book early: accessible cabins are limited on every ship. Ask for the exact features — door widths, roll-in shower, grab bars, turning space — and whether the cabin is fully accessible or ambulatory-accessible.
What is a tender port, and why does it matter?
When a ship anchors offshore, guests go ashore by small boat (a tender). Boarding a tender can involve steps and a moving platform, and in rough seas wheelchair users may not be able to go ashore. Choose itineraries with more docked ports if this matters to you.
Can I bring my own scooter or rent one?
Most lines allow personal mobility devices within size limits, and specialist companies deliver rental scooters and wheelchairs to the ship. Notify the cruise line in advance.
